Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
In all seriousness, I feel like a lot of folks genuinely don’t know how slaves were mentally broken. Like they ain’t just take you off the boat and give you a shovel. They had a model of breaking people’s will, and anyone thinking they could endure what slaves endured and stay the same are wildin.
America was uniquely brutal when it came to breaking slaves. You weren’t allowed your native tongue, your native religion, your music, and even your name. Any cultural connections to Africa were banned.
If you had a family, they were separated. if you had kids, they were sold off. Anyone you knew and loved could be sold to another plantation or killed at any time and you’d never see them again. You were not allowed a sense of community.
You weren’t allowed to read. You weren’t allowed to write. you weren’t allowed any level of education outside of what your master thought you needed to know to do your job. Many slaves would live and die without ever leaving the plantation.
And now you got niggas today thinking they could endure all that trauma and still come out swinging at massa. The fact that ANYONE made it out of those conditions is a testament to the human spirit.
Do not downplay what those people had to overcome for you to be where you are now.
Honestly the fact that you’re here and in this current time frame is a testament to your ancestors will and you should always respect that
